BUNBUN030
I have been a drawer/illustrator for some time. I draw what the client wants on commission, and in my own time, I draw rabbits named Bunbuns, a fun ongoing project that allows me to try different techniques and materials. Bunbuns were born from a sticker, quickly leading to comics and animations online, and later strips on paper. That alone wasn’t enough, so now I like to use the hashtag #everyiscanvas, featuring Bunbuns on everything from LPs, cutting boards, tiles, and walls, and now, thanks to this project, also on electrical cabinets.
The story behind the artwork
Oh, this is funny! There were people who asked for a Bunbun to be included on a cabinet in their neighborhood. They mentioned that a whole zoo of animals lived in their garden (bats, hedgehogs, bees, and more). I incorporated the hedgehog into the design.
‘While painting, they came by, and told that I was painting the wrong electricity box.”
There was a scheduling issue, so their cabinet was just around the corner and not where I was working. The hedgehog was already in a jar in the water, but I hadn’t started on the other animals, so I left them out in the stormy sea. Later, all the animals appeared together on the right cabinet in a different composition (Marislaan 24).
How did the painting go?
It was a beautiful day, and the painting was going well. It wasn’t busy, but now and then, you would hear someone say, “That’s nice!” or “Good job!” as they passed by. So, it was quite a shock when an angry white man approached me, claiming he did not like art (his words). He stood there, foaming at the mouth, telling me that painting in public spaces was not allowed. Of course, I had forgotten to pick up the explanatory letter that provided information about my work. In the end, I was able to calm him down by asking if he wanted to call the police, assuring him that I would be working for a few more hours and had no intention of running away.
