PAM WERLOTTE
Pam Werlotte is an illustrator, graphic designer, and artist from Amersfoort/Utrecht. “In my illustrations, I primarily explore how to weave old stories, traditional drawing techniques, and imagination into something new. In this quest, I often feel connected to themes such as nature, mysticism, and how women can be central to these narratives.”
Over the next six months she will be working on a graphic novel, which means she will have the opportunity to delve into a whole range of new subjects.
The story behind this artwork
During my conversation with the neighborhood contact person, she expressed her pride in how green the area is and how much effort everyone puts into maintaining it. She felt that everyone contributes to making it a pleasant place to live.
For this design, I chose to depict two female-like figures caring for the plants in the neighborhood. They nurture the plants so that they grow larger than themselves, allowing the plants to take over the area. Through this design, I aimed to highlight the harmonious and loving relationship between humans and nature, with a focus on collaboration and community. It illustrates how, with the support of the community, nature is not only protected but also helps the neighborhood to flourish and thrive.
How did the painting go?
It was a long painting journey with plenty of visits from both neighborhood children and residents. Everyone always responded very positively, and a few times I was asked if I would also paint the other boxes in the area.
