Maximilian Goldin (Max) also known as Tonton is a visual designer, artist and illustrator from Cape Town, South Africa, now living in Utrecht. His work centers around play, nature and imagination. His work comes to life through a variety of mediums – including murals, picture book illustration, writing humorous verse skits and most recently rug tufting.
The story behind the artwork
I’ve named the artwork Portal. The piece is positioned on the corner where two streets, Saturnuustraat and Orionsstraat meet. It’s an interesting neighbourhood with photos of people hard mounted on the exterior walls of many of the houses in the blocks. As far as I understand it they are picture tributes to the previous generation of residents who lived here.
My electricity box is located under a wedding picture of a woman, an electrician and their kid. It is very much inspired by this and the mystery surrounding these strangers. Cross pollenated with the planet names of the streets and you have yourself a cosmic celebration.
How did the painting go?
The people of the neighborhood responded really well to the artwork and were very welcoming and friendly throughout the process. While I dont speak Dutch, at times my communication was limited, but I had some really nice encounters with the residents. I especially enjoyed how interested and engaged the kids were walking by looking on with curious eyes. Hopefully I could stimulate and inspire them a bit and provide some fertilizer for their imaginations.
A special encounter was with a lady with disabilities who was in her wheelchair who chatted to me for a while and said how sometimes she felt like she was from another planet and my piece really spoke to her.
