Ellis Tolsma is a freelance illustrator and visual artist from Utrecht, Netherlands. She employs a cheerful and graphic visual language inspired by vintage children’s books, patterns, and toys. Ellis’s work is characterized by geometric shapes, bold color combinations, abstractions, and a retro touch. This retro feel is enhanced by printing much of her work with an old-fashioned risograph printer. Based in Utrecht, Ellis also runs Studio Misprint and believes in the importance of experimenting and making mistakes along the way.
The story behind the artwork
My design turned into a vibrant and graphic depiction filled with birds and plants. Through conversations with the local residents, it became clear that they have a strong appreciation for greenery, color, and birds. I combined these elements into a sleek and lively illustration to align with their preferences.
How did the painting go?
The painting went really well, although it took a bit longer than expected. I had some help, and the weather was nice (though it was a bit too hot on the second day!). The residents were all incredibly positive and happy to see something being done with the box. I even received a poem and a card game as gifts, so everyone was really kind! I truly appreciated that.
