Daan Lucas continually seeks to balance playfulness with depth in his work. As an animator and illustrator, he creates colorful and detailed worlds where childlike joy intertwines with adult themes. His characters and compositions are designed to stimulate and invite exploration. For Daan, each project is an opportunity to offer visual delight while revealing something new and unexpected through humor, creativity, and attention to detail.
The story behind this artwork
According to local residents, a mysterious blue-purple flower has been spreading throughout Tuinwijk for some time. This plant, which only needs a tiny crack or crevice in a wall to grow, is the creeping bellflower, or *Campanula poscharskyana*. Originally from the Dinaric Alps in Croatia, it has now become well-established in the city.
In my design, I’ve allowed the creeping bellflower to further overtake Tuinwijk. People gaze in awe as a building is completely engulfed and constrained by the plant. While the bellflower is in full bloom, a girl sits peacefully atop the building.
To create a striking effect, I used contrasting colors. The typical orange and green of Tuinwijk stand out vividly against the dark blue sky and the deep green leaves of the creeping bellflower.
How did the painting go?
While painting, I started with the larger shapes and repeatedly returned to refine the details. Next to me, a real creeping bellflower was growing, so I always had a reference handy.
Passersby frequently stopped to chat and were enthusiastic about my work. They even pointed to additional electrical boxes across the street, saying, “When you’re done, there are a few more over there!” Many people came back during the painting days to watch the box gradually take shape.
