Mags is an illustrator known primarily for her YouTube videos. She spent two years creating and documenting a daily portrait, sharing her progress and artistic journey along the way. The story behind the artwork

Did you know that Egmondkade used to be right by the water?

That’s why it’s called ‘kade’ (quay). To bring a bit of that water back, here’s the Great Crested Grebe! A beloved bird in Utrecht.

This Grebe ‘fieuws’ at all the passing traffic or when you put out your trash.

But remember: only birds should whistle back.

How did the painting go?

When a neighbor passed by to throw out his garbage, I saw my chance to clean up the area and the utility box. The container can only be opened with a card, so together we picked up all the trash around it. The neighbor didn’t speak Dutch, so we communicated with friendly smiles and nods. A bit later, he returned with a bottle of water. I didn’t immediately understand what he wanted, but with gestures, he showed me that the water was to wash my hands. Then, he gently poured some water over my hands.
