CIKA ANNEMAE
I prefer to paint on walls and in public spaces. Ever since I was young, I’ve been inspired by graffiti. In my own paintings, I often combine text with illustrations. My work features many (fantasy) animals and insects, through which I try to emphasize our connection with nature. Painting allows you to draw attention to what you find important.
The story behind the artwork
One of the local residents was enthusiastic about the neighborhood and suggested the idea of painting something with a pelican as a reference to the street name, which I listened to. Additionally, these kinds of cabinets are often a spot for graffiti and tags. This particular cabinet was not white and empty before I painted it. By emphasizing letters in this design, I want to give extra recognition to those who write letters on cabinets.
The text rhymes and doesn’t really make sense, but it’s amusing (and at the very least, colorful).
How did the painting go?
One of the local residents mentioned that the recently deceased cat of a neighborhood woman was named “Banaan,” which makes it especially fitting.
