Tessa van Vuren is an illustrator and 2D animator from Utrecht. In her work, she enjoys telling stories about people, their world, and emotions, often drawing inspiration from her own life. Using a blend of analog materials and digital techniques, Tessa creates images aimed at bringing a smile to viewers’ faces and offering a sense of recognition.

The story behind this artwork

My box is situated next to the old nurse’s residence, where nurses from the Academic Hospital used to rest in a communal lounge, read, and eat. Each nurse also had her own bedroom. Keeping the theme of sharing in mind, I created an illustration of a dining table with nurses eating, talking, and reading together. On the second box, there’s an illustration of a nurse relaxing outside and drinking a cup of tea. There’s also a large ivy plant depicted, referencing the ivy that once grew over the entire nurse’s residence.

How did the painting go?

I enjoyed spending three days outside painting — it wa a big contrast to my usual workday of animating behind a laptop. Passersby responded with great enthusiasm. By the end of the first day, several people had already brought me coffee, ice cream, and cookies. The gardener working a few houses down would check in every few hours to see how things were going and gave me tips on how to cool down (as it was 30 degrees those days). The Irish neighbor across the street insisted on bringing me something from the city, and she surprised me with freshly squeezed orange juice and Scottish cookies.
