Feya Hijl is a vibrant illustrator and graphic designer from Utrecht. Boobie Babes represents self-love, positivity, and doing what makes you happy. It has become her personal guiding principle. Her work is characterized by colorful, playful, and bold forms. With Boobie Babes, she aims to create a ripple effect of positivity and strength that inspires others to follow their own path. Themes such as (women) empowerment, body positivity, and a connection to (our own) nature are always present in her work. She thinks in colors and shapes, as diverse as humanity itself. Boobie Babes stands for being human (with all that it entails), self-love, and the pursuit of dreams. She spreads her message through illustrations, exhibitions, prints, cards, and murals.

Let’s spread The Boobie Babes Message together!

The story behind the artwork

The box is located at the intersection of Groenmarktstraat and Veilinghavenkade. As the name suggests, Veilinghavenkade is situated by the former harbor of the Utrecht vegetable auction on the Merwede Canal. Therefore, nature and colorful fruit had to feature prominently in my design—two of my favorite things! The painting depicts two powerful Babes dancing through the greenery. On one side, there are juicy oranges, and sweet raspberries are also included. My box serves as a colorful and sweet reminder of this historic location, combined with the contemporary message I wish to convey as an artist.

The story behind the artwork

I really enjoy painting in public spaces. In the beginning, it’s always a bit of an adjustment with all the traffic and activity around, but the positive reactions from people give such a boost. People honk, shout kind words, or offer coffee, which feels so uplifting. A few locals kept an eye on the process and then came over to chat and share stories about the neighborhood. Painting in public gives you, as a creator, the chance to tell your story.

On my second day painting, a man came by with an analog camera. He asked if he could take photos of the process for a personal photo series. Hopefully, I’ll receive copies of the pictures once they’re developed – how exciting!

One challenge while painting was the weather. The weather is hard to predict, so unfortunately, my piece got a bit damaged from the moisture. But in the end, it turned out alright.
