The story behind the artwork

The neighborhood’s request was to create something that reflects Dichterswijk, the local nature, and the children in the area. That’s exactly what I did.

I created an illustration of a bee writing poetry in a little nook—a poet-bee. Since my box is small and located next to a large playground, I thought it would be nice to create something specifically for preschoolers, who are at eye level with the box. I included a rhyme—a little poem that the bee might have written. Parents can read it aloud, and perhaps children will find an answer, an idea, or a solution.

En jij?

How did the painting go?

It was incredibly fun to do. I was overwhelmed with gratitude from Paula and other neighborhood residents, and the children’s reactions were delightful! One little boy recognized from my sketches that I had practiced mimicking wood. Another boy, who could already read, pondered the rhyme and was proud of his answer: “A bee!!!”
