MONIQUE VAN DER WAL
Monique is a visual artist who primarily works in illustration and graphic design, though she also dabbles in animation and essay films. Her main source of inspiration is nature and its constant movement. She combines this with her love for myths and legends to bring the magic of the past into everyday life.
The story behind the artwork
My design was inspired by a story from a local resident who pointed out the swallow nest boxes across the street from this electrical box. I have a deep love for swallows because of their graceful aerial dances in the morning and evening. To emphasize this theme of dancing, I added two figures of women dancing or floating, leaving their relationship open to interpretation—whether they are fairies, nymphs, sisters, or friends. What I do know is that the swallows provide a protective backdrop for them.
How did the painting go?
Painting the box was an absolute joy. Over the four and a half days that I worked on it, I got to know the neighborhood residents really well. I was constantly offered tea, refreshing cold water on the hot days, and even a slice of cake once!
