LIZAN VERMEULEN

POTLOODSLAGER

I’m actually a high school teacher, but when I draw, it’s often everyday things. Additionally, I’m very focused on what’s happening around me and in the world. I incorporate these elements into my drawings, where I like to use humor.

The story behind the artwork

I thought it was important that my box fit well with its surroundings. Nachtegaalstraat is one of my favorite streets in Utrecht. I love the bustling atmosphere, the good vibe, and the beautiful architecture. The street always feels familiar: everyone in Utrecht knows the street (at least I assume so).

I’m also very fond of birds, which inspired me to turn the box into a matchbox design. Everyone knows the famous swallow matchbox, and I like that this design evokes a certain recognition for everyone. Additionally, I felt that the design matched the street well: classic and familiar. Instead of a swallow, I drew a nightingale, along with the name and location of the street.

How did the painting go?

The Nachtegaalstraat is incredibly busy, so I had many conversations with the local residents. I don’t mind a chat, so I actually enjoyed it. However, those conversations did slow me down, making the work take longer than expected.

One time, while I was on a break eating next to my box, someone from a delivery van threw 10 cents at me from their window. I guess it was a sign of appreciation. It was quite remarkable. I ended up forgetting to take the 10 cents with me, so it might still be there.
