Gigi van Grevenbroek makes the world more accessible with her illustrations. Based in Havenloods in Utrecht, she works on commissioned projects and runs her webshop offering postcards, prints, and notebooks. Her work includes digital art, murals, and window drawings for clients such as the Rijksmuseum, MINI, Wereldmuseum, Festival Mysteryland, and Women Inc.

Gigi aims to connect people through her illustrations and simplify complex topics for a wide audience. Each image tells a story that raises awareness about social issues, including her Indonesian roots and human rights. She represents these themes with vibrant colors, natural elements, and everyday objects. Sustainability is also a core value in her business, which is why all her products are made from recycled and repurposed materials in the Netherlands.

The story behind the artwork

The Minkade is a small car-free paradise where the water gently flows past the houses, the splashing of canoes and boats can be heard, and you wake up to the chirping of birds. It’s a perfect spot that brings tranquility back to a bustling city.

Gigi’s illustration captures all these elements. The box is small but colorful, making it stand out in the street and encouraging people to take a closer look to catch the details. With this approach, Gigi, as a creative maker, aims to make passersby pause, both literally and figuratively.

How did the painting go?

The painting started on a sunny day, with garden gnomes and passing residents with their dogs greeting us. Even the white and orange-spotted cat walked by several times with curious eyes. Some people stopped briefly to chat, such as the resident with her Pomeranian named Beer. His paw print is incorporated into the design.
