ANNA KOPPEN
My name is Anna. I am an animator and illustrator, and I graduated from HKU in 2021. I enjoy taking the viewer on a journey through my own emotions and thoughts, and I’m fascinated by initiating conversations about topics that are often left unspoken. Everything I create is a reflection of myself and my personal experiences.
The story behind this artwork
I’ve been happily living in Lombok for several years now. This work is a tribute to a warm day in the neighborhood. Lombok is diverse, and I wanted to showcase multiple locations, but the area around the Muntgebouw, where the box is situated, is central to me. With my background as an animator, my illustrative work often carries a narrative element. As I worked on this design, I envisioned my entire day and the places I frequent. This box is almost like a comic strip, filled with my favorite aspects of the neighborhood.
How did the painting go?
I chose a warm week to paint, which was perfect for working outside and helped me connect deeply with my design. Many people passing by stopped to chat, often expressing their enthusiasm about the growing presence of art in the city and mentioning other boxes they had spotted. The neighbors living next to the box were incredibly kind and even gave me some delicious homemade apple pie. The highlight was when the box was nearly finished: the neighborhood kids had come by earlier, and I heard one of them excitedly shout, “Elsa, Elsa, it’s done, come and see!!”
